We love spring, but “spring” is a relative term here in the mountains. At lower elevations, it can look like, well, spring, with the return of greenery and some flowers peeking out. At the higher elevations, though, many refer to it as “mud season,” especially from April through about mid-May. This is when the snowpack starts to thaw, causing the ground to remain soggy and making it difficult to get outside for adventures. Still, for some, mud season could be the perfect time to visit YMCA of the Rockies’ Snow Mountain Ranch, particularly if you’re looking for some peace and quiet in a cabin with a world-class view. What’s more, as winter winds down, our Nordic ski crowds fade, and the whole area welcomes a much-needed respite from the busy season.

Is “mud season” at Snow Mountain Ranch right for you? Take our very easy quiz below!

  • Are you looking for a relaxing spot to work remote?
  • Are you hoping to savor winter’s last breath and get in some late-season skiing?
  • Do you relish the idea of lounging in a cozy cabin with a good book and great view?
  • Are you curious to explore the less-visited western side of Rocky Mountain National Park before the summer crowds?

If you answered “yes!” to any of those four questions, a spring stay at Snow Mountain Ranch is for you! See below for your exclusive Spring Thaw discount and some helpful sample itineraries.

3 Ways to Enjoy Your Mud Season Getaway

1.  Relax at your cozy cabin. Grab a good book, puzzle, or board game from the Snow Mountain Ranch Library and curl up by the fireplace. Most cabins at Snow Mountain Ranch boast an unbeatable mountain view. With full kitchens and all the cooking utensils you’ll need, you can also explore your culinary side. This type of solitude is the stuff family memories are made of. You might never want to leave your cabin!

2. Sneak in some late-season skiing. Winter Park Resort, a quick 20-minute drive from Snow Mountain Ranch, typically stays open in to May. Thanks to the high elevation of Colorado ski resorts, there is plenty of snow well into the spring. Enjoy free live music and themed parties during the Resort’s Spring Bash & Splash event on weekends from March 30-April 21.

3. Visit Rocky Mountain National Park before the crowds and before the timed-entry system starts on May 24. If you aren’t deterred by some snow, spring is a wonderful time to visit the National Park. While there are some road closures and snow packed trails to consider, you can still enjoy the beauty of the Park during this time and likely have it all to yourself.
