Artist in Residence: Laura Barrow
Laura studied painting (and printmaking) in acrylic, watercolor, oil, and gouache beginning in college. While at Duke University she painted abstractly. In time, her love of the landscape led her to use paint to interpret nature more directly. After the demanding years of raising young children passed, Laura renewed her study of landscape painting.
Laura aims to make art that shares what she thinks is worth noticing all around us. Her paintings celebrate not only her chosen subjects or views but also the creative act itself: translating nature through mark making. Laura believes that art making is an important way to bring gratitude and hope into focus, and this in turn helps all of us to be ourselves more authentically. Laura enjoys helping her students of all ages celebrate and reconnect with their own God-given creativity.
Laura is an exhibiting artist with Oil Painters of America (OPA), National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society (NOAPS), and Plein Air Austin (PAA). She was featured as an “Artist to Watch” in Southwest Art Magazine in 2020 and won “Best Outdoor Still Life” in a Plein Air Salon competition the same year.
Laura’s work can be seen at laurabarrow.com and in her Austin, TX gallery.
