There's something special about fall in the Colorado mountains. The mornings are crisp. The trails are quieter. Aspens turn brilliant shades of gold. And at Snow Mountain Ranch, you can fill a few days with adventure—or leave plenty of room to simply slow down.
Even better? You don't need to schedule every minute.
Many of our favorite fall activities are self-guided and included with your stay, which means you can wake up, see what the day brings and choose your own adventure. Hike when you're ready. Challenge the family to mini golf. Hunt for a geocache. Grab a board game for the cabin. Or do absolutely nothing for a while except sit outside and take in the view.
Whether your fall getaway happens over a weekend or a few quieter weekdays, here's one way to spend three days at Snow Mountain Ranch.
DAY ONE: ARRIVE, UNPACK & HEAD OUTSIDE
Afternoon: Settle in and explore
Once you've checked into your cabin or lodge room, resist the temptation to unpack every suitcase. Fall days are too beautiful to waste.
Start with an easy walk around the property and get your bearings. Snow Mountain Ranch is spread across more than 5,000 acres, so simply wandering can feel like an adventure.
Then make your first stop the Programs Building and pick up everything you need for a geocaching adventure. Using GPS coordinates, you'll search for hidden caches tucked around the property. It's part treasure hunt, part hike and a great way to discover places you might otherwise miss.
If you have a little more time, squeeze in a round of miniature golf. The 27-hole course is open in the fall, equipment is waiting at the course, and there's no reservation required.
Evening: Make your own mountain night
Head back to your cabin for dinner, play cards around the table or borrow a book or board game from the Snow Mountain Ranch Library.
Want the full fall experience? Find a fireplace to gather around for stories, games and family conversation. Grab some snacks at the General Store and spend the evening by the warm glow of the fire.
Then bundle up, step outside and look up. At 8,750 feet, a clear night at Snow Mountain Ranch is entertainment all by itself.
DAY TWO: MAKE IT A BIG OUTDOOR DAY
Morning: Hit the trail
Grab breakfast, fill your water bottles, dress in layers and head out for a hike.
Snow Mountain Ranch has trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging adventures. Waterfall Trail is a longtime favorite, while those looking for something bigger can tackle 9-Mile Mountain.
There's no tour time to make and no group to keep up with. Pick a trail that works for your family, take your time and stop for plenty of photos along the way.
Fall hiking comes with its own rewards: golden aspens, cool temperatures, expansive mountain views and the crunch of leaves beneath your boots.
Afternoon: Try a different kind of course
After lunch, trade hiking shoes for flying discs.
The 18-hole disc golf course winds through the Snow Mountain Ranch landscape with views of the subalpine forest and Continental Divide. Bring your own discs or rent them at the Programs Building.
Not feeling competitive? That's okay. Your score is optional. The mountain views are not.
Families can also check out equipment for basketball, volleyball, pickleball, soccer, Frisbee and other games and create their own afternoon tournament.
Or let the kids choose the next stop. Playgrounds around the property offer an easy place to burn off some energy while parents enjoy the mountain air.
Late afternoon: Head inside
Fall weather in the Rockies can change quickly, but that doesn't have to change your plans.
Head to the Kiva Recreation Center for roller skating, basketball, ping pong, foosball, billiards and other indoor fun. Roller skates are provided, so all you have to bring is your willingness to give it a try.
For something quieter, stop at the Craft Shop and make a souvenir instead of buying one. Choose from projects such as ceramics, leatherwork, mosaics, tie-dye, wood burning and kids' crafts. Project fees vary.
Evening: Slow things down
This is vacation. You don't need to fill every hour.
Order a pizza or make dinner in your cabin. Put together a puzzle. Read by the fire. Take an after-dinner walk. Sit on the porch with a warm drink.
Sometimes the best activity at Snow Mountain Ranch is simply having nowhere else you need to be.
DAY THREE: ONE MORE ADVENTURE
Morning: Choose your favorite—or try something new
Before heading home, there's time for one more adventure.
Take another short hike. Finish the geocache challenge. Play a mini golf rematch. Grab a basketball and shoot hoops. Visit the dog park with your four-legged family member. Or find a quiet spot outside with the book you picked up from the library.
If you want to add a facilitated activity to your stay, check the current activity schedule before your trip. Depending on availability, fall options can include archery, indoor climbing and the Aerial Challenge Course, which require advance reservations and additional fees.
And if the weather turns chilly? Even better. Head indoors for roller skating, games, crafts or a swim before packing up for home.
THE BEST FALL SCHEDULE? YOUR OWN.
A getaway doesn't always need an itinerary packed with reservations.
Fall at Snow Mountain Ranch is an invitation to do things a little differently—to wake up without an alarm, choose an adventure based on the weather and everyone's mood, and spend more time together without worrying about what's next.
Many activities, including hiking, geocaching, miniature golf, disc golf, playgrounds, the library, roller skating, sports and games, are included with a Snow Mountain Ranch lodging reservation.
Come for the golden aspens and cool mountain air. Stay for the trails, games, adventures and evenings together.
And don't be surprised if the best part of your getaway is the time you never scheduled at all.
