October in the Rockies: Fall Adventures and the Start of Winter

By: YMCA of the Rockies / 02 Oct 2026

October is when the Colorado Rockies really begin to change.

The golden aspens of September give way to cooler mornings, shorter days and the possibility of the season's first real snow. But winter is no longer something far off on the horizon. At YMCA of the Rockies, October is a month for enjoying the final weeks of fall while beginning to look ahead to everything the snowy season brings.

Whether you're visiting Estes Park Center or Snow Mountain Ranch, October offers a unique combination of fall activities, seasonal events and the anticipation of winter.

The Rockies Start Preparing for Winter

By October, the mountains can feel noticeably different from just a few weeks earlier.

Temperatures can drop quickly after sunset while snow is probable at higher elevations. Weather conditions can change throughout the day. A sunny afternoon can turn into a cold evening, making layers and warm clothing increasingly important for anyone spending time outside.

That doesn't mean October is the end of hiking, biking or exploring. In fact, the cooler temperatures can make outdoor adventures especially enjoyable. It simply means that a mountain getaway requires a little more preparation.

At YMCA of the Rockies, October is also a time when some seasonal activities begin winding down while winter activities start getting closer. At Snow Mountain Ranch, the transition is particularly exciting as the property prepares for another season of Nordic skiing and other snow activities.

October at Estes Park Center

Estes Park Center is surrounded by the changing landscape of Rocky Mountain National Park, making October an ideal time to experience the transition from fall to winter.

Fall activities range from hiking and nature programs to climbing, crafts and other family recreation.

October also brings a distinctly festive atmosphere to Estes Park.

Fantastical Fall

From October 3 through October 30, YMCA of the Rockies is hosting Fantastical Fall programming at Estes Park Center. The month-long celebration combines fall scenery with family-friendly activities inspired by magic, mystery and mountain legends.

Visitors can take part in activities including creature tracking, hiking, indoor climbing, an Enchanted Forest Scavenger Hunt, fairy-themed activities, potion making, wand making and local legends programming.

It gives families another reason to visit Estes Park during October, especially as the weather starts pushing some activities indoors.

Elk Fest

Early October also brings one of Estes Park's signature fall traditions. Elk Fest takes place October 3-4, 2026, at Bond Park and the Estes Park Events Complex.

The free, family-friendly event celebrates the annual elk rut with wildlife education, bugling demonstrations, Native American music and storytelling, vendors and live entertainment.

For visitors staying at Estes Park Center, it can be an opportunity to experience the elk season both around the property and in town while learning more about the animals that make the Estes Valley their home.

Pumpkins, Art and Fall in Town

October's events continue beyond Elk Fest. Estes Park's calendar also includes First Friday Art Groove on October 2 and the Pumpkins & Pilsners Festival on October 10.

That gives an October stay plenty of ways to experience the community beyond the trails and the YMCA property.

Later in the month, Estes Park Center gets a little spookier as we get closer to Halloween.

Haunted Mountainside Lodge

On October 23-24, YMCA of the Rockies will host Haunted Mountainside Lodge at Mountainside Lodge.

The Friday evening experience is family-friendly, while Saturday's event is intended for guests ages 16 and older. The event combines local history, mountain legends and Halloween atmosphere inside one of Estes Park Center's historic lodges. Admission is free for YMCA guests, members and staff, while public admission is $10.

October at Snow Mountain Ranch

October looks a little different at Snow Mountain Ranch.

The 5,100-acre property near Winter Park and Grand Lake offers plenty of space to enjoy the last stretches of fall before winter settles into the high country. Hiking, mountain biking and other outdoor activities can still be part of an October visit, while indoor activities provide an easy alternative when temperatures drop.

Get Ready for Nordic Skiing

Snow Mountain Ranch's Nordic Center is preparing for another winter season, with miles of groomed trails available once conditions allow. Nordic skiing typically runs from November through April, with trail access included for overnight guests and YMCA of the Rockies members.

That makes October a great time to start thinking about a winter getaway.

On October 7, YMCA of the Rockies will also open reservations for winter and spring cabin stays covering December 1, 2026 through May 31, 2027. Online reservations open at 6 a.m. Mountain Time, with phone reservations beginning at 8 a.m.

If you're hoping to spend Thanksgiving, the holidays or a spring ski trip at Snow Mountain Ranch, October is the time to start planning.

Fall Fest

Celebrate fall with an afternoon of family fun on October 24 from 1–4 p.m. at the Nordic Center. Enjoy warm drinks, snacks, Halloween candy, fall games and crafts plus a horse activity provided by Rocky Mountain Stables. Costumes are encouraged, and admission is free.

Let It Glow

Snow Mountain Ranch is also keeping the fun going as the days get shorter.

Let It Glow Skate Nights are scheduled throughout October, including October 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 5-9 p.m. The event offers an indoor way to enjoy an evening at the ranch as fall temperatures begin to drop.

Western Wednesdays are also scheduled throughout October, giving guests another recurring activity to add to their stay.

These types of activities are especially useful during the month when daylight disappears earlier with Daylight Savings and mountain evenings can get cold quickly.

Pack for Fall, But Prepare for Winter

If you're visiting YMCA of the Rockies in October, layers become even more important.

A typical fall packing list should include:

  • Warm layers such as fleece sweaters or insulated jackets
  • Long pants and comfortable outdoor clothing
  • A waterproof or weather-resistant outer layer
  • Warm socks and sturdy shoes or hiking boots
  • A hat and gloves
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • A reusable water bottle
  • A daypack for carrying extra layers
  • Warm clothes for evenings and early mornings

If you're visiting later in October, consider bringing footwear that can handle snow or wet conditions.

Most importantly, check the forecast immediately before your trip. Mountain weather can change quickly, and conditions at Estes Park or Snow Mountain Ranch can be very different from what you're experiencing at home.

The Beginning of Winter

There's something exciting about visiting the mountains when one season is giving way to another.

In October, you can still hike beneath golden aspens, explore the trails and enjoy the crisp fall air. But you'll also see signs of what's coming next. The evenings get colder. Snow becomes increasingly possible. Winter activities start appearing on the calendar. And at Snow Mountain Ranch, the Nordic Center is getting closer to opening for another season.

At Estes Park Center, October's combination of fall adventures, Fantastical Fall programming and Halloween events creates a memorable final chapter to autumn.

At Snow Mountain Ranch, October offers a quieter opportunity to enjoy the property before winter transforms the landscape into a destination for Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and other snow activities.

Make the Most of Fall and Winter

October gives you a chance to experience the best of both seasons in the Colorado Rockies.

During the day, you can still take advantage of fall. Explore the trails beneath golden aspens, enjoy a mountain bike ride, hike through the crisp autumn air or head into Estes Park for one of the area's seasonal events. The landscape may still look like fall, but the cooler temperatures and shorter days add a distinctly wintery feeling to the experience.

Then, as the sun goes down, lean into the season ahead. Bundle up for a chilly evening, enjoy indoor activities at the ranch or start planning your next winter adventure. At Snow Mountain Ranch, that might mean looking ahead to Nordic skiing and snowshoeing. At Estes Park Center, it can mean returning later in the season to experience the mountains under a blanket of snow.

That's what makes October such a special time to visit YMCA of the Rockies. You don't necessarily have to choose between fall and winter. You can enjoy the golden leaves, cool mountain air and fall events while also getting a preview of the snowy adventures still to come.

Pack your layers, bring your sense of adventure and make the most of both seasons while they're meeting in the mountains.
