Changing of the Seasons: Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing

By: YMCA of the Rockies / 26 Oct 2026

As autumn gives way to winter in the Rockies, the landscape around YMCA of the Rockies' Snow Mountain Ranch begins to change. As the golden aspen leaves drop and reveal the branches beneath, the first snow begins to settle across the meadows and evergreens, signaling the transition from fall to winter at Snow Mountain Ranch. The seasonal transition is part of what makes this time of year special, especially for anyone looking forward to exploring the outdoors on cross-country skis or snowshoes. The first snowfall does not always mean the trails are ready for the winter activities though. Snow conditions develop throughout the season and the right amount of coverage makes a difference for both the experience and the condition of the trails. Trails open until the minimum conditions and coverage are met.

When Fall Becomes Winter

Early-season weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. A snowfall may cover the meadows one day, only for warmer temperatures to reveal patches of grass and dirt the next. Consistent snow coverage is needed before many trails are ready for winter use. Cross-country ski trails require a deep enough snow base that can be groomed and tracked. Snowshoeing also requires enough snow to cover uneven ground, rocks, and vegetation. There is no single snow-depth requirement for every trail at Snow Mountain Ranch because terrain, weather, and grooming conditions all affect when individual routes are ready. Our guests planning an early-season visit should check current trail conditions before heading out. The Nordic Center's grooming report provides updates on trail conditions and grooming, helping visitors choose the right day for their plans.

Find Your Winter Adventure at the Nordic Center

The Nordic Center at Snow Mountain Ranch is the place to start for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Its network of trails winds through pine forests, open meadows, and mountain terrain, offering ways to explore the changing landscape at different paces and skill levels. With approximately 82.5 kilometers of groomed track and trails, there is plenty of room to discover a favorite route. Cross-country skiing offers an active way to travel through the winter scenery, whether you are learning the basics or building on years of experience. Snowshoeing provides another way to explore, with a more relaxed pace that lets you take in the quiet woods, snowy clearings, and mountain views. The Nordic Center also offers ski rentals and lessons for guests who want to try something new or improve their technique. Snowshoe rentals are available through the Programs Building. YMCA of the Rockies members and overnight guests receive complimentary trail passes, while day visitors can purchase a pass for access. Check the Nordic Center website for current trail information, rentals, lessons, and rates before your visit.

What to Wear for a Day on the Trails

The mountain weather in the Rockies can change quickly, especially during the transition from fall to winter. A sunny morning can turn windy or snowy by the afternoon and temperatures can feel very different when you are moving through the forest compared with stopping in an open meadow. Dressing in layers helps you stay comfortable throughout your outing.

● Start with a moisture-wicking base layer. Choose materials that move sweat away from your skin. Synthetic fabrics or merino wool work well, while cotton can stay damp and leave you feeling cold.

● Add an insulating layer. A fleece or lightweight insulated jacket helps retain warmth. You can adjust this layer as your activity level and the temperature change.

● Bring a weather-resistant outer layer. A windproof and water-resistant jacket helps protect you from blowing snow, wind, and changing conditions.

● Protect your digits. Warm gloves or mittens, a hat or headband, and wool or synthetic socks help keep you comfortable and safe. Goggles can also be useful in bright snow as the sun reflects and when dealing with windy conditions.

● Choose appropriate footwear. Cross-country ski boots should fit your equipment while snowshoeing calls for sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good traction.

● Pack water and snacks. Cold weather can make it easy to overlook hydration, but spending time outdoors at elevation still requires regular water breaks. Snacks help keep your energy up during longer outings. A small backpack makes it easy to carry extra layers, water, snacks, and other essentials. Checking the forecast before leaving your lodging can help you decide what to bring.

Enjoy the Season at Your Own Pace

The change from fall to winter does not happen all at once and that is part of the appeal. Some visits may offer a mix of those golden falls colors and early snow, while later-season trips bring more consistent winter snow that can offer more opportunities for skiing and snowshoeing. Snow Mountain Ranch offers plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors as the seasons change. Watch the landscape transform, explore the trails when conditions allow, and take time to appreciate the quieter side of the Rockies.
