Celebrating a $2 Million Gift Toward the New Nordic Center
March 2025
For five generations, the Schlessman family has been connected to YMCA of the Rockies. They have found respite, renewal, community, adventure, and for many, a second home through its mission. In turn, the family elected to support the impact and growth of the YMCA with a $2 million grant toward the new Nordic Center.
"The Nordic Center is where many of us put on skis for the first time, and our investment in developing a new facility is something we believe will help enhance accessible entry into winter outdoor recreation in Colorado."
— Lauren Watel, Schlessman Family Foundation President
The Schlessman Family Foundation's grant is one of the first major contributions toward the new Nordic Center at Snow Mountain Ranch — a facility that will represent a total philanthropic investment of over $11 million when complete.
The new 13,336 sq. ft. Nordic Center will serve 30,000+ guests annually with world-class trails, a café, retail, ski rental, adaptive accessibility, and sustainability features including geothermal heating and solar power. It will replace a repurposed 1985 summer camp dining hall that has been used far beyond its life expectancy.
The Schlessman family connection to YMCA of the Rockies runs deep — the late Lee Schlessman served on the Board of Directors, and Gary Schlessman is a current board member. Both Lauren Watel and Gary Schlessman serve on the Rocky Mountain Leadership Council for the Climbing Higher campaign.
The family's support has strengthened the YMCA’s mission through capital projects, scholarships, Camp Chief Ouray, charitable stays, and more—helping ensure access and opportunity for all. Now, their investment in the Nordic Center will create a world-class, inclusive space that will serve skiers of all abilities for years to come.
