1. What kind of kids come to Camp Chief Ouray?
The majority of campers who attend Camp Chief Ouray come from the Denver and Boulder areas in Colorado. On average, we have children from over thirty states and several foreign countries. The camp is divided evenly between boys and girls. Campers are between the ages of 8 and 15 for the Traditional Camp Program; 13-17 for the Wilderness Adventure Program; 14-18 for the Leadership Training Program.

¨ Housing and meals are provided. During time off, staff can also eat meals at no cost at the Snow Mtn. Ranch Commons.
¨ CCO staff receive a 20% discount at Snow Mtn. Gift Shop and Buckboard Grille; use of Snow Mtn. recreation facilities-free
¨ CCO staff are eligible for up to 3 complimentary nights at the YMCA of the Rockies Estes Park Center if space is available.
Cabin Staff will normally have time off between each session from late Friday evening until noon Sunday. During the week there will be assigned 2 hour blocks for additional time off. Non-Cabin, Leadership and Wilderness Adventure Staff will have comperable time off, however, the time periods and days for the majority of these positions will vary from week to week.
6. Where will I live? What are the cabins like?
Cabin Staff- Live in cabin groups with their campers in either the West or East Villages of camp. The West Village has 18 cabins (generally for ages 11-15) that have sleeping space for 8 to 18 campers including a small, comfortable attached room for the cabin counselors. The West Village cabins share modern and heated central bathhouses (one for boys; one for girls). These cabins are a rustic passive solar design with electricity but no heat. The East Village consists of two dormitory-style buildings with central heat usually for ages 8-10. East Village counselors share a room with three to nine campers sharing modern central bathroom facilities on each floor. All housing units have built-in bunk beds with mattresses. Staff will need to provide their own adequate sleeping bags and appropriate pillows and linens. Clothing storage space is limited.
Non-Cabin Staff- Live in either the West or East Village housing units depending upon their position. They share rooms with two to three other non cabin staff and use the same bathhouses as cabin staff.
Wilderness Adventure and Leadership Program Staff- Live in assigned rooms in the East Village dormitory, however, these staff members spend most of their time on the trail or living in the tipi villages.
7. Can I do my laundry at camp?
A coin operated laundry is on the Snow Mtn. Ranch property for guests and staff.
8. What other policies should I be aware of?
HEALTH. . . . .All staff are required to be examined by a physician within 24 months of their last day of employment at camp. All medications brought to the camp must, BY LAW, be given to the Health Center staff for safe keeping. We are located seven miles from the Granby Medical Clinic, a 24 hour medical and emergency facility. Should you need to see a doctor for a non-work related injury or illness, you would be responsible for providing the appropriate insurance information or paying for services rendered at the time of your visit. Prescriptions would be handled in the same manner. (Health benefits are not available to seasonal staff ).
CERTIFICATIONS. . . . CPR and First Aid are required for all positions current through the employment agreement. Camp is not always able to offer a class on site. Locate a certification class immediately. Leadership Program and Wilderness Adventure staff and the Horse Specialist and WIT Coordinator are required to attend the Wilderness First Aid Training at CCO and be currently certified in CPR. Aquatics certifications are required for some positions.
DRESS CODE. . . . .Clothing and general appearance (no tube, tank or sleeveless tops, please) must be appropriate in the opinion of management for the work to be done. A neatly trimmed mustache, goatee or beard is permitted. Male employee’s hair cannot be below ear lobe length. All employee hair must be a “natural” color and not be dreaded. No more than two earrings in each ear lobe will be permitted. No other visible body piercing will be allowed. No offensive tattoos may be visible.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK. . . . .All staff are required to be checked with the Central Registry for Crimes Against Children within the state of Colorado. In addition, all staff will have their Criminal Background checked with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and/or the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). All staff will be fingerprinted after their arrival at camp.
DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY. . . . .Camp Chief Ouray is a drug, alcohol and tobacco free environment. The YMCA of the Rockies has a Drug and Alcohol Policy in place which includes ZERO TOLERANCE for drugs, alcohol and tobacco in the camp environment. We reserve the right to test any employee.
PETS. . . . .Pets are not allowed at YMCA/Camp Chief Ouray.
